Outdoor students on the go…

The second outdoor activity for this scholastic year was organised on the 2nd November and included an excursion to Comino. This activity was preceded by an afternoon seminar and a short briefing the day before the activity. A group of 14 students and 3 teachers landed at Crystal Lagoon in the morning and proceed southwards towards the Comino Tower and the old Palace. On the way to and in the vicinity of the tower spectacular views of coastal cliffs and caves together with views of Malta and Gozo in the distance could be seen.

Although Comino is very close to mainland Malta and even closer to its’ other sister island Gozo, this tiny island still offers its own unique set of environments. Overall, the predominant feeling all over the island is that of tranquillity while visuals consist of green garigue, a small tree dominated valley and a rugged coastline.

From the Tower the hiking team followed the road to Santa Marija Battery. On the way, the Miskta cavern was also visited.

At Santa Marija Battery the history of the battery was discussed and a short map reading exercise was carried out.

From the battery, the group processed directly to the eastern and north-eastern sectors of the island which are considered by many as the most remote parts if the island.

As the group crossed the eastern coast the undulating landscape was very evident and within less than an hour the highest spot on the island was reached.

From here, the trail descended down to Santa Marija caves which were viewed from the cliff and further down towards the Ghemieri peninsula one of the larger land caves was also visited.

Another short mapping exercise was carried out next to the island’s chapel. The team then proceeded directly to the Blue Lagoon where it was also possible to swim and enjoy the clear waters.

Notwithstanding the unstable weather the activity was a great success with a reasonable amount of teamwork and adventure.
